About me

Siree van der Velde

I am a visual artist and I live in the Netherlands.

My subject matter is the human figure, mainly the feminine figure. I am inspired by Greek and Etruscan statues; I love the bodies, the postures, the movements, the drama. I feel recognition. I see my life. I feel it. The realization that these statues were made an unimaginably long time ago by people just like you and me, I find movingly beautiful.

I use materials that allow me to work directly and quickly: pencil, watercolor, and cut-out pieces of paper. Initially, my work is semi-permanent. I have lots of separate cut-out pieces like arms, legs, and torsos. I pin them on the wall, rearrange them, add pieces, and look for happy coincidences. Until everything gently falls into place: a brand new image with ancient roots.
